Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Grassroots democracy is essential for the development of a participatory and inclusive political system, especially at the local government level. Kachia Local Government Area, located in Kaduna State, is home to a diverse population with varying levels of political engagement. Over the years, traditional methods of political communication have been insufficient in promoting meaningful civic participation, especially in rural and underserved areas. However, digital media has emerged as a transformative tool, enabling local residents to engage in political discourse, share information, and participate in democratic processes. Social media platforms, blogs, and mobile applications have enabled citizens to access information about elections, government policies, and community development. Research by Olayemi et al. (2023) has highlighted the role of digital media in increasing political participation and fostering transparency at the grassroots level. This study aims to explore how digital media is being used to foster grassroots democracy in Kachia, focusing on its impact on political awareness, voter mobilization, and accountability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Kachia, political participation has traditionally been low, particularly among the rural population. Although digital media holds the potential to enhance democratic engagement, there is a lack of comprehensive research into how effectively digital media fosters grassroots democracy in the region. This study seeks to assess the role of digital media in fostering political participation, transparency, and accountability in local governance.
